more dieter rams ♥

Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams.
The more I read on him, the more I see visual vomit everywhere I look. And that's actually a good thing - I'm trying hard to train myself to peel the layers, dial it down, simplify, say it with the least amount of information. I'm putting this book in my wish list.

find the dot

While belly aching to an old friend (about folks' disregard for white space), he wrote me:

i had a teacher that had the best example of the power of white space... he had 2 papers. one had a bunch of #$@& on it, the other blank... he held up the junky one for us to look at. then he put a dot on it and showed us again and asked us to find the dot... it was hard.... then he held up the blank one, put a dot on it and said, I defy you to NOT notice the dot... the power of white space!

we need to fill the hole

this is one of the directions i received in an email today, regarding a piece i'm working on. just skip to the highlighted portion for maximum (design) pleasure. oy. click to read it:

white space is your friend

if i hear one more untrained design professional tell me i'm not "using all the negative space on the page" and should probably put their logo there, I'm going to jam my sharpie into my left eye. (and my friends are saying "if you say that one more time, Else, and doesn't do it, WE WILL stab you with the sharpie ourselves).

i seriously think that if one understood the principles of white space & clutter in design, one would NOT ASK ME to "fill that space" ANYMORE!!!!! (yes, i'm yelling here)

come on, folks! dial it down, peel the layers, cut the clutter and Lysol the crap out of your designs. simple is beautiful.

off the soap box now.

here's a couple of decent article about it:
