show & tell: present your work, 3 ways
DROP MOCKS
Probably my favorite because there's no signing up or uploading and it's so convenient when all you want is show a quick preview of your work. You literally drag files into the browser window and ta da. Then share the url with others for a quick online presentation. (watch your file size though, it doesn't like high rez stuff) www.dropmocks.com

CONNECT-A-SKETCH
Another pointlesscorp app, it basically allows you to upload your roughs & sketches and create an interactive prototype to be presented or shared. I'm still testing this one. www.connectasketch.com

PREZI
Shared by a colleague of mine, Prezi is pretty thorough, it does just about any file format, videos, etc... You mix all kinds of content and create your own version of a presentation. The tutorials are pretty helpful too. Start there if you're interested. www.prezi.com

doyald young

Very sad to learn this morning that logotype designer Doyald Young has passed. He was 84. An advocate for craftsmanship and precision in typography, his work is beyond brilliant.
lynda.com has a couple of Doyald videos you must check out.
(thank you for sharing, Ralston, via "Nanners")

john bramblitt
John lost his sight in 2011 and as a creative outlet decided to learn how to paint. Incredibly, he uses his other senses to draw & mix color - he knows what colors are by simply feeling their texture. He's never seen his wife or son but has painted a perfect portrait of them, as well as other known figures he's had a chance to meet and well, feel their faces so he could paint them. Pretty inspiring.

more chalk ♥

I despise caramel (i'm going somewhere with this). And do you know why? Because I have the gift of "obsession until sick", is what my mother calls it. When Else Cake was 8ish, she spent an entire allowance on a giant bag of hard caramels, her favorite. I knew if I went home my mom was going to make me share them with my mean, mean brothers so instead, I climbed up my neighbor's tree and ate the entire bag. I got sick. The end.
Chalk lettering & drawing is becoming my caramels. I'm obsessing. I'm pretty sure I'll be sick of it before long and will feel ill at the sight of it. But for now? I'm up in the tree feeling nothing but love for it.
xoxo,
Else Pooh
PS: Oh, geez. By the way, this is Dana Tanamachi. She's a Brooklyn based letterer & graphic designer. I ♥ u, Dana.

a short history of production

this is a book by Xavier Antin, made by printing each of the four colors (CMYK) on different stages of printing technology. (growing up, my little church in Brazil used stencil duplicators to print their materials and children's booklets. I remember getting "high" off the alcohol fumes helping my mom print Sunday school handouts. Those things date back to 1800's. I wish I had one)found on Ministry of Type, book posted here >>

carnaval in brazil

it's carnaval season again. while i don't miss the extreme nudity and promiscuity that takes over the country (and the air) for an entire week, i do miss the artistic events, the parades and the music - in every village, town or city. It's a party. 24 hours. For a week. Nothing like it.
